Family Fun in York This July: Your 2026 Guide to a Great Summer
July in York is one of those months where the city really shows off. The evenings are long, the river's buzzing, and the school summer holidays are just around the corner — which means it's the perfect time to start planning some family days out. Whether you're a long-time York local or thinking about making the move here (we might be a little biased, but this city is made for family life), here's what's on this July.
York Maze opens 11 July
The UK's biggest maize maze is back for the summer season, running from Saturday 11 July to Thursday 3 September 2026, 10am–6.30pm. Built from over a million maize plants, York Maze is genuinely a full day out — think 20-plus rides and attractions alongside the giant corn maze itself, from the Crowmania tractor ride to slides, crazy golf and water play for the little ones. Tickets are online-only and it does sell out on peak days, so it's worth booking ahead, especially if you're planning your visit for that first weekend after school breaks up. You'll find it just outside the city at Elvington Lane, about 15 minutes from the centre.
York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge — Sunday 12 July
One of the city's best free spectator events, the York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge sees 36 teams race brightly decorated dragon boats along the River Ouse between Scarborough Bridge and Lendal Bridge, from around 10am until the grand final at 4pm. It's a brilliant, buzzy atmosphere — bring a picnic blanket, grab an ice cream, and watch from the north bank (the Museum Gardens side), which is also where the family-friendly stalls and charity gazebos are set up. It's free to watch and always a firm favourite with York families.

Rainy day (or sunny day) sorted: National Railway Museum
Free entry, right in the city centre, and genuinely built with families in mind. Over the school holidays the National Railway Museum runs a lively programme of science shows, storytelling, and hands-on activities, and the Wonderlab gallery has facilitated sessions where kids can design, build and test their own structures — split by age group so both younger and older children get something suited to them. It's an easy one to slot in if the weather turns, or simply if you fancy a free, low-cost day that still feels like a proper outing.

More ways to fill the long summer evenings
York's compact size is honestly one of its best features for families — you can walk between most of these without needing the car:
Museum Gardens – a lovely spot for a picnic, with the ruins of St Mary's Abbey to explore and plenty of grass for the kids to run off steam.
A walk (or scoot) along the city walls – free, scenic, and a genuinely fun way to see York from a different angle.
The River Ouse – hire a rowing boat or take a river cruise, or just enjoy an ice cream by the water.
